The timeline that actually works – and why the light decides it
The best couple pictures happen in a window of 40 minutes. Plan the day around it and you never have to restage anything. This is what a realistic running order looks like.
Almost every wedding that runs out of time at the end has the same problem: the running order was planned around what the venue wanted, not around the light. Yet the golden hour is the one point in the day nobody can move.
When is the golden hour?
It begins about an hour before sunset and lasts 30 to 50 minutes depending on the season. In June in Bavarian Swabia that means roughly 8:15 pm, by the end of September it is already 6:30 pm. A difference of almost two hours – and yet the day is often planned to the same template.
A running order that works
Getting ready from three hours before the ceremony, with slack for the journey. The ceremony. Then the drinks reception and the group pictures, while all the guests are still together – with 40 people that takes about 25 minutes, not ten.
The decisive block: 30 to 45 minutes of couple shoot, placed in the golden hour. That means dinner either ends before it or begins after it. Both work – it just should not fall right in the middle.
The three most common mistakes
First: group pictures only after dinner. By then some guests are already outside and others are no longer quite with you. Second: no slack between the ceremony and the reception – ten minutes of delay shifts the whole evening. Third: putting the couple shoot at midday because that is when there happens to be time. Hard midday light is the most difficult situation of the day.
What to do if it rains?
A good plan has an indoor alternative for every outdoor point, looked at in advance. Rain is not a problem if it is planned for – covered entrances, window light and umbrellas often give the more unusual pictures.

Frequent questions on this topic
How long does a couple shoot take?
30 to 45 minutes is enough for the pictures that actually get used later. Longer shoots become exhausting for most couples without the results getting any better.
Should the group pictures be before or after dinner?
Before, straight after the drinks reception. Then all the guests are present and lining everyone up takes half as long.
